Post: Famed St. Louis restaurateur Charlie Gitto Sr. Dies

I met him once! When I was a short order cook, my boss dragged me over to Gitto’s to eyeball some secondhand restaurant equipment. He was nice – distant, couldn’t give a rats about me, but I was all of 22 years old and as inconsequential to him as a partial eclipse – but he was cordial enough and sideways bought me a beer. Can’t mourn him, but I do recognize that he was important in this town.
